Behind the front

Departing from De Panne we drive up to Mendinghem and Dozinghem CWGC cemetery. During the 3rd Battle of Ypres the military field hospitals were situated here. Among others the American neurological surgeon Harvey Cushing was active at these military hospitals. At Poperinghe we visit Talbot House, including the museum at the Concert Hall. During the Great War officers and men found themselves a safe haven here, away from the dreaded trenches and shell holes.

However, Poperinge was not only a place for recreation. Visiting the Shot at dawn site at the town hall, it becomes clear that Poperinge really was the centre of all life behind the front. If time permitting, we can also visit Lyssenthoek Military Cemetery and Visitor Centre. Lunch at the Menin Road Museum or it is also possible at the In Flanders Fields Museum if a visit to the museum is added to the itinerary.

Return to De Panne or start a new itinerary in the Ypres region.
